Hagverdiyev Mashadi Zeynal

Hagverdiyev Mashadi Zeynal was born in 1851 in Karkijahan village of Shusha uyezd (district). While studying in Shusha real school he grew in the environment of the well-known cultural figures such as Firudin bey Kocharli, Yusuf bey Melikhagnazarov, Azad bey Amirov, Kerim bey Mehmandarov, Najaf bey Vezirov, Abdurrahim bey Hagverdiyev, Jabbar Garyaghdyoglu, and was one of the tar players who had played a prominent role in the musical life of Azerbaijan. Mashadi Zeynal studied at famous tar player Ali Asgar. Still being young, he was charms of Shusha majlises, and attracted the attention not only of the listeners, as well as of musicians. With his tar decorated with pearls Mashadi Zeynal for long years had accompanied Chakmachi Muhammad, Abdulbagi Zulalov and Mashadi Muhammad Farzaliyev, Shahnaz Abbas, Segah Islam, Majid Behbudov, afterwards Seyid Shushinski and others in public events and “Eastern concerts”. Mashadi Zeynal also participated and displayed his great mastery in first “Eastern concerts” in Shusha.

Mashadi Zeynal occupies one of the honorable places among the classical music workers of Azerbaijan. He was one of the patriots of classic tar school. All his life Mashadi Zeynal endeavored for the development of Azerbaijani music. He played not to satisfy the taste of the rich and aristocratic families, but to meet the spiritual needs of the broad mass of people and till the last days of his life he did not tear himself from his favorite tar. The famous tar player Mashadi Zeynal died in 1918 in Baku.
